Most vehicle owners in Victoria have to register for 12 months but next year that’s going to change. If your rego expires on or after 1 January 2018, you will have the option to pay for 3, 6 or 12 months. The Vic government hopes short-term rego will help take the pain away from the annual $800.80 bill for registration and CTP insurance.
Short-term rego
In Victoria, there are 5.6 million registration renewals each year, including 4.5 million light vehicles. Drivers of cars, utes, vans, motorbikes or mobile plant will now be able to take advantage of new short-term options. Unfortunately, owners cannot make short-term payments for light trailers, caravans, boats or vessels.
If your rego expires:
- On or after 1 January 2018, you can pay for 3, 6 or 12 months
- Before 1 January 2018, you must pay for 12 months until the following year.
Payments for short-term rego are the same as usual (online, phone) but there is a $2.45 fee for each renewal. This means it costs an extra $9.80 a year for quarterly renewals.
By setting up a myVicRoads online account, you can receive electronic reminders for when your next registration payment is due.
